Subak Bali's ancient irrigation system

One of Bali's greatest assets is its stunning rice fields. Just by looking at them you can imagine that maintaining them is pretty complicated. So not surprisingly there is an organization responsible for the irrigation of these fields which is called the 'subak'. Every Balinese village has one of these so called irrigation organizations and all rice field farmers are obliged to join Subak and do what this organization asks them to do.  Bali is a mountainous volcanic island and to get the water supply from the mountains onto the rice fields below isn't an easy job. It takes a complex system of canals, tunnels, pipes, dams and dikes to flood or drain the rice fields at the right time.

If a Balinese rice farmer had to do this by himself it would be mission impossible. That's why the Balinese had to organize themselves into Subak or irrigation organizations since the ninth century to create something we travellers today love to see and make pictures of. The irrigation organization plans the distribution of water to all the rice field farmers and ensures that there is no shortage. It also does repairs on the many canals, dams and dikes and helps to prevent that sand or waste clogs the rice fields. The head of the organization is called the 'kliang' and the headmen are called 'penyarikan subak' who have assistants called 'pangliman'.

Nusa Dua Is the Most Exclusive Place In Bali

Nusa Dua is known as an enclave of large international 5-star resorts in south-eastern Bali. It is located 40 kilometers from Denpasar, the provincial capital of Bali, and administered under Kuta South District. Nusa Dua means two islands (nusa 'island', dua 'two').

Nusa Dua is the name of the peninsula that extends off the southern tip of the island of Bali, and it’s also the name of the island’s major international resort area on that peninsula. This area was specifically created during the 1980s to house high-end resorts and conference centers, and as a way of showcasing Indonesia in general.

The resort area is similarly as beautiful as much of the rest of the island, but in most ways it’s quite the opposite of everything else. Much of Bali’s infrastructure and all of its charm were already firmly in place when tourist began discovering it in earnest in the early 1970s. So as the tourism boom gained momentum in the traditional cities and towns, and particularly concentrated in the Kuta/Legian area, the scene always reflected local sensibilities and the unique culture of the island. But Nusa Dua was purpose-built from the ground up to be exactly what it is, so in some ways it has more in common with modern-day Las Vegas or Macau than it does with the rest of Bali.
